I went to visit a favorite author of short stories in his idyllic solar house tucked away in the foothills of northern California.
I listened to him talk about his life. He has packed a lot into his 85 years. He made us a garlic-jalapeƱo dip. Wonderful. You can google it. It won him prize.
We saw the sun shine on his garlic beds, talked of wild turkeys and gophers.
We talked about writing, and the narrowing of diversity in this literary world of blockbuster sellers, lists and charts.
And then we went to a restaurant that I hadn't been to since I was a child. And to his astonishment, even though this was almost 40 years ago, my recollections were completely correct.
Just goes to show, a writer sees things and remembers.
Even when he or she is a child.
And if they can hold onto this gift, one day, they might become a writer.
Looking back, I can see the towering redwoods, his house on the large swath of land with the does and the hummingbirds. He has spent a lifetime doing things that he loves, things that truly interest him and he's engaged and vigorous . Life changes, and he's rolled through all of them and what I saw was a man who has lived his life well. It inspires me, because as my own life goes through this rather unpredictable path we're all on, I know if I stick to what I love, things will turn out alright.
Enjoy the slideshow!

You're a cleaver chickie Kanani, how'd you do that?
Hope you had a wonderful break.
Hi Eryl,
I uploaded my photographs onto a free online program called photobucket.
Then I used the created a "remix." It's a very basic "drop-editing" program, and you can insert text, as well as royalty-free music of different lengths!
Glad you liked it. Yes, I had a great break.
It sounds like you had a good time, Kanani, and Chester Aaron sounds as though he has, and has had, an interesting life. That is something that is more important to me than even becoming an author!
Vapid, greedy me, I cannot get the idea of that jalapeno garlic dip out of my mind! The closest Mexican restaurant we have here is in Carlisle, and any tacky, Tex-Mex 'Mexican' restaurant in California would put it to shame. What they consider spicy salsa here is something I'd give to a baby without a moment's hesitation. And there are a few 'Mexican' restaurants in Glasgow and Edinburgh, but the ones I have been to are so laughably unauthentic I could weep, and they cost an arm and a leg.

He wrote two charming books on garlic. You can find them used or new.
"Garlic is Life: a memoir with recipe"
and "The Great Garlic Book."

I think nothing is more attractive at any age, than a person who has realized how to enjoy just being, in whatever circumstances. These people seem to enjoy a simple walk in the park, as well as a safari. Good post.
Thank you!
We buy great quantities of garlic and I fear my kids go to school reeking of it. If a recipe calls for a clove, I put in six. Kimchee, pizza and pesto are among our all-time favorite foods, and if Chester Aaron lived near us, we would be giving him some serious custom.
Mary,
I have extra copies of his garlic book. Since you were the only one brave enough to do the IKEA palindrome contest, I'd like to send it to you. You can email me at easywriter101@gmail.com
i'm so excited to have found this! i'm going to visit mr. aaron next week and i CANNOT wait.....
