I think it's ironic that as a writer who has spent most of her time wearing nothing but casual clothes and reading tomes on the flora and fauna of waterways, is now doing things like covering fashion and attending fashion events.
Anyhoo..... all this fashion makes me wonder about stylists. I mean, what makes a good stylist? How does a stylist get frequent jobs?
What makes a great stylist? And pray tell --just what does a stylist for celebrities do when the The Oscars are over ?
Do they go over to the National Book Awards and offer their services? (They really should, you know),
Compounding my delight over my new role is that I know someone who has put himself in the lineup for a TV reality show. I know, I don't like these shows either. But let's face it. How many people do you know who would set themselves up as a sitting duck, waiting to have their essence defined by a videographer and an editor?
(Frankly, I think we should have a Reality TV show for novelists and agents. But in reverse. Twelve agents move into a house in NYC and compete for the attention from one best selling author plus a new wardrobe from Ralph Lauren and use of Oprah's chef for six months. Only really, the author in question doesn't really care. ...only wants the big TV deal money . The author does things like stand them up at Elaine's, or has them go get his dry cleaning and walk his dog. He asks them to find him a date for the National Book Awards, then offends them all by hitting on one of the agent's teen age daughters --who accepts.)
But back to the reason for this post.
Christopher M. is one of twelve stylists who will be competing for the title of "Glam God" in the eponymously named new reality TV (aka cutthroat) show on VH1.
Enduring sleep deprivation, a lack of
personal privacy, and a series of hoops designed to stress, test, mess with one's mind, only one of the twelve will be a juggernaut and win. For sure, there'll be cat fights, crying, misguided "speechifying" and even some heart shown during the run of the show. Hostess Vivica A. Fox will dance the lead fandango with the talented but overtired stylists.I'll be at the Glam God preview party this Thursday. The Literary Fashionista will blog the show! And check out Christopher M's new fashion blog: Fashion 4 Words.

All these "reality" shows--Give Me A Break---Are so Formulaic now....Same rules on each one, basically...just different (Well, somewhat) subjects....I'll be honest with you, I'm not sure I can watch another one of these....And of course, the outcome has already happened! LOL!
The STARS of these shows are The Editors! I hope it is your friend who was the winner!
Naomi,
Yes, they're not only forumlaic, they're scripted and edited to those means. I hope Christopher wins as well. Like everyone, he could really use the money!
At least you get to be at the preview party, which should be rather fun.
I have never watched reality TV, including American Idol...it seems so unreal.
Carole, I have to say that those televangelists were the first to give us reality TV. Honey! Tammy Fay and her hubby Jim!! Was there any bigger reality TV show that that? :0)
Anyhoo.... American Idol, So You Think You Can Dance are the tame side of reality TV shows. The rest --ugh! Most of it is utter contrived gutter material.
But then, there are a few fun ones.
I don't know what this one will be. I've never been a fan of Vivica A. Fox.
All the luck to your friend Christopher. Although I am reality TVed out, I know what great things it does to launch people who need launching. Have fun at the premeir. I'll be checking out the first episode to cheer on another Chris!
Postcard arrived today from Las Vegas :)
You must have spent a fortune on stamps!
Shannon -I pretty much can't stand reality TV anymore, either Shannon. But because I've met some of the cast, I'll watch this one.
For the most part, I can't wait for The Office to come back, and for the past two weeks I've been hooked on The Olympics.
Kim -Spending money on postcards is a small pleasure! I'm glad you got them all. I hope the kids have enjoyed them and have been looking on maps for Arizona and Washington. ;0)
