"Breaking Bread" image from the Gay Bible Christians OrganizationProp 8 seeks to overturn a March 2008 California supreme court ruling banning the exclusion of gays and lesbians from entering into marriage, by defining the institution as solely between a man and a woman. The reasons for not my supporting it start with not one, but many small vignettes. These are people who have shaped my views on humankind.
My 83 year old uncle died with his companion of 40 years at his side. They were devoted to one another and had expressed their love through consideration, compassion, kindness and patience. They were gay. They lived together in a small midwestern city when it was dangerous to come out. Perhaps people thought of them as "gentlemen bachelors," "best buddies," or "men who've been burnt one too many times by women." They built a good life, had successful careers, guided my uncle's daughter (by his one and only marriage) into adulthood and had a house filled with cherubs.
I know a lesbian, who with her life partner adopted a girl with known and profound disabilities. They fought for special education, they took parenting classes, tracked down specialists --and they did this out of love.
For a long time, I volunteered at the AIDS Services Foundation. I met fine men and women. Some were HIV positive, many were not. All were committed to easing the lives of those living with the disease. They organized groups for women, men, for teens who had parents that were HIV positive, for children who had it as well. They had a voter education unit to ensure the passage of the Ryan White Act. There were Friday fun nights to take client's minds off the difficulties and laugh. I made many friends. One, a tall gorgeous creature named JD, was gentle and self effacing. I visited him the night he died. JD left, but his friendship stayed with me.
The importance of acceptance and love was driven home when more than one parent came to us in grief because they had disowned their son when he came out. They never learned he had full blown AIDS until he was either on his death bed or had already passed away. Their grief was deep because they hadn't had a chance for reconciliation. Hatred and bigotry can build impenetrable walls of our own design. Many worked through their grief by working in the food pantry. I hope they have forgiven themselves.
And not to end these vignettes on a sad note --my best friend Eddie lifts my spirits even though he moved 3 years ago. Where would I be without hilarious phone messages? How could I live without his reassurance? Just thinking about him makes me smile.
These friends live lives shaped by love, strengthened by courage and are awash in light. They have extended themselves with compassion, kindness, consideration and patience. And I believe, they have God's love ....after all...it's huge.
And now, these sturdy soldiers of selflessness are caught up in a maelstrom
with Proposition 8. In conservative evangelical fundamentalist Pastor Bill Walden's blog, he's coming to grips that many of his own flock have been less than kind to homosexuals. He's finally realizing that not only the gay and lesbian community's (as well as many others) response in dubbing it PropH8te is born out years of so-called Christians castigating gays and lesbians as a sinful subhuman species. I sense Walden is a man who --while ardently for Proposition 8, is also wanting a dialog. He's invited one anti-Prop 8 protester to his church. It remains to be seen if his invitation is accepted. Not everyone shares the same viewpoint when it comes to God, salvation, faith, or even a creator. And this is something to understand and accept. But there are places where everyone is accepted as they are. My own church, All Saints, was one of the first to bless gay unions. We celebrate the commitment of two people to live with mutual consent of heart, mind and will. I support the celebration of two people who are willing to give to one another a life of goodness and charity because I have seen the transformational power of love, I will not vote for Proposition 8, I will not limit their right to express their commitment to one another.

Thank you very much for posting this - it is beautiful.
As are YOU...
XOXOXOXO
We are all God's children - aren't we?
David and Pat,
Well, I find their declaration of "love" for the gay community a bit fortuitous. They want the proposition passed, and so they start with a line (as the man did when he came to my door, "I LOVE your gay relatives, you know") or they do what Pastor Bill has done and start talking about how sorry they are gays have been mistreated by some Christians.
Pastor Bill is an okay guy to disagree with. However, others in his flock have a more standardized approach in responding.
One lady did by throwing loads of scripture stating that she believed that no matter how good you are, it's all for naught if you don't seek salvation in JC.
Now, I respect her point of view, but it's not exactly the easiest way to initiate a conversation.
Toss scripture at a group of people and it's easy shut down any possible dialog. That's pretty much the problem. You can't be so centered on what you think that you never take into account others might not see the world the same way. How many religions are there? How many creators? How many ways of being? How many rites? How many stories?
Many.
Beautifully written.
Thank you.
Hey, Grackle Girl!
It's good to see another PRG reader over here! Thanks for the kudos. So much has been written about Prop 8, few would ponder those they are slamming.

Very good post. Being a pastor's wife in a strong evangelical denomination, I hear a lot of dialog about these matters, but one of the many things I find hypocritical about "us" is that we teach and preach that we are created in God's image. "Well, that is, if that image conforms to our image of what we think God is like."

Hey Carol,
Yes, I agree. We're all so different.
Well, I've been following Rev. Robert Schuller's break with his son over at the Crystal Cathedral (which isn't too far from where I live).
He said this on Sunday:
"I was called to start a mission, not a church. There is a difference....You don't try to preach...what is sin and what isn't sin. A mission is a place where you ask nonbelievers to come and find faith and hope and feel love. We're a mission first, a church second."
I wish others would get this message.
Beautiful post. You go!
Thanks Jenny!
People will believe what they want. But for one group to change the consitution in order to both express their disapproval against one group and also to foist their own view onto the masses by changing the constitution is too much.
Hey Easy Writer,
I saw that I got a few visits from your mention of my blogsite, so I backtracked you to here.
Thanks for the gracious introduction to your readership. I appreciate that.
I might stick around for a bit, if I may. Perhaps dialog a bit too, if that's O.K.
Anyway it's nice to visit your site, and I will be lurking a bit. Oh, that sounds sinister, doesn't it. I'll be in the wings. There, that's better. ;)
Take care...Bill Walden
I meant to use my name in the comment identity area.
Hope I can visit a bit.
Take care,
Pastor Bill Walden
Hi Pastor Bill, Of course you can visit here. You can lurk or you can jump in. I pretty much post about whatever comes up at the time.
I'm glad you tracked me back. I really don't get what track backs are --really don't understand readers or any of that stuff. Someday, someone will have to tell me what all that stuff does.
Anyway, I think the value of blogging is that it allows me to go into worlds that run counter to mine. One of my very dear blogging buddies is a woman (who has since shut down her blog because she got busy) whose husband is an evangelical preacher in the midwest. We've found loads of common ground. I found her through a blogging buddy in Scotland --who is an athiest. From those two, I found another woman who is a scholar on Nietzche. And then there's pi, the former actress, and from her ... I found Naomi in the hills who writes about old Hollywood. Now, old Hollywood is where I found Project Rungay. And from there I found David Dust, who is unabashedly gay! From David, I found Joe.My.God. who writes about politics and how policy affects the rights of gays. Somehow, I also found SargeCharlie --a conservative, who provides the nicest ground for discussion even if you don't agree with him. And from Sarge, I found MimiWrites, who started the blog blast for peace.
And there ya have it.
A rich blogosphere!
