I found all these at the library. I'm reading three of them concurrently because each offers a slightly different take on a region, and it's interesting to compare them. Afghanistan, The Places In Between and Bad Lands all offer such contrasting observations told by very different persons. Eric Newby's book is an old one but always worth revisiting. Anyway, check them out. They're all worth reading and believe me --I've looked more than once over some traveling boots (but never fear --this summer I'm flying across to the East coast, driving north, then across and down. It will take forever. I will be with teens. Pray for me.) The movie raises good questions about causes and passions. And Kent Haruf's book "West of Last Chance" is about the American west, and is pure relaxation for me.
Also, in my final rewrite, I've started up with a new writing program called Scrivener. This could singlehandedly change the way novels look. It's a gem. And it's only $39.99. It's only for Mac users. Wow, this is pretty incredible.
Eryl, it really is! But I'm so SLOW that a one hour tutorial took me a week because I was doing it in between other things. It's written by some guy in the UK (I think). But here's the link: Scrivener
Hi Travis... I have a mac AND a pc! The PC is for work stuff, it sits next to my mac. I got a mac mini for only $469.00 and I love it. Much less clunky that Windows.
"Greetings, Kanani. You are one damned fine writer. Keep it up and stretch out to other areas. There's got to be a book in you." -Pulitzer Prize winning journalist Al Martinez
"You are a great writer and you do it everyday." Journalist Bob Ehlert, The Sacramento Bee
I do especially love books by Lonely Planet. Might have to check one of these out!

In the words of my geographically challenged son, when told we were going to Tuscon, "Are there cruises that go there?"
ReplyDeleteYes, it will be a long trip.
A plane is looking better everyday!
I love your womanly geographical description of your trip. What fodder you will gain and I look forward to reading about it.
ReplyDeleteThat writing program looks interesting, I can't afford it but I'll check it out anyway.

ReplyDeleteBut I don't have a Mac.
ReplyDeleteI definitely need a program like that. I need a PC program just like that.
