Fourth of July has always been a special day. When I was a kid, we'd go over to Tuxedo Park where the symphony had set up white chairs and would play from 5 p.m. and through the fireworks. It was a beautiful setting. Large oak trees, green lawn, a river, and fireworks overhead. I loved listening to the John Phillip Sousa marches as the fireworks burst forth in shapes of waterfalls and camellias.Today, we'll go over to our neighbors house and play horseshoes, cards, eat, and watch the fireworks from their porch. It's not an understatement that this Fourth is different from all the rest.
Here's something I got from hubby:
"It is pretty quiet today except we were just attacked by the Special Forces. They have a water-balloon launcher on the roof of their compound and were blasting us as we come out of the officers' quarters. Lucky they had crappy aim. That was their way of inviting us to their Forth (sic) of July party. We went over and had steak, lobster and a turkey someone had terminated."Terminating a turkey is a new concept that could only come from the military. It sounds like something Jack Bauer should say were he stuck on a farm for Thanksgiving.
I also wanted to share these photos of a Concrete Beach that I took a month ago. Each week, a new company graduates from the School of Infantry at Camp Pendleton. Sponsored by the Armed Forces YMCA, we go in and barbecue hot dogs for one or two companies (roughly 385 men) after they finish their big hike that has taken 5 days. This particular day had an unexpected surprise. One of the volunteers was working when she spied someone she had gone to high school with in Utah! They will all go on to fulfill needed positions such as medics, technicians, linguists and any number of jobs. When you serve them hotdogs and start talking to them, you realize they could be your son.
One thing for sure, they seem to possess a sense of purpose, which is so great to see in young people. So enjoy the photos. And think of them on this special day. After all, many of whom I've met are probably over in Helmand province right now.

Jim, Like you, I learned more from that piece than anything that's been written. I think one of the downfalls of how the newspapers have falling apart is a shortage of expansive journalism that brings clarity. On Monday, I'll post a link on my milspouse blog, since the women I know are always reading.

To celebrate the day here I'm sending a check to the USO (phone cards)
"The Boys" don't like booming fireworks so I like to stay home and keep them company. If the "Ventana" has fireworks I can see them from my window.
Oh, that's really nice! The USO is a great organization!! I've met some of their volunteers at the LAX facility and they're a dedicated bunch.
Oh, I think my dog has gotten used to the fireworks. We have them every night courtesy of Disney. I watched them last night --they were red, white and blue.
