We had a very nice Christmas. It seems like this week has flown by. Picking up The Hubs on Tuesday, then Christmas came barreling in. We didn't get the tree up until Wednesday, and not even decorated until Thursday. But I didn't mind. In fact, one issue I have with putting up the tree is that the cat continuously decides to climb into it, and settle onto the branches! When one tries to get him out, he just claws into it, and then there's a pulling match between you, the cat, and the tree! This has been a comparatively stress-free Christmas, though. We gave only the things the kids needed, and just didn't worry about whether or not the tree was up early, or if we put lights up in front.
One nice thing about having him back is that the kids absolutely adore spending the time with him. He's happy to be here, but is already talking about going back. There are several opportunities for him at other posts, as well. So I feel mixed about moving, especially with his career that seems it could go so many directions.
There's a real good chance he'll be back there in 2011, perhaps for a year. My gut is telling me not to move, especially with Daughter starting high school in Fall 2010. If we move, we could well be looking at 2 moves in the next 4 years. Not easy for a teen. The school she's set to go to here in town is in the top 30 of the U.S. In comparison, the schools in Savannah are a mixed lot, unless I pay a lot of money (15k) for private school. In addition, our support system here is great --she's in the Boys and Girls Club where she's doing community projects, her friends are the good girls in middle school.
But then, the brain catches up. It's all of these small moments of seeing him day to day that fill in her knowledge of him, and do the substantial shaping. And for the past year, we've seen him for very short stretches of time. 5 days, 7 days. This three week stretch is the longest of all.
So yes, I'm going through all of these thoughts right now. I know people like Empress Bee moved a lot, and countless others did too. But was there ever a point where you just wanted to stop?

my kids were "army brats" from birth so i think it was very different. they moved 20 times in 20 years! but teens are harder, much harder i know. there is no easy answer. is there an onbase school? because they are usually good. at least they used to be.

No, there isn't a high school on base. Every school we've asked about --except one, has gotten not so great reviews. And that one is in the most boring community imagineable rife with Homeowner's associations (which I'm loathe to get into).
ReplyDeleteSince he's not going to be there too much longer, we will probably save this house as a rental, and rent elsewhere!
And Sarge was right! The summers there are dreadful!
